Abbey Road was the last studio album The Beatles recorded. There’s some confusion over this bit of trivia because Let It Be was released in 1970 and Abbey Road was released in 1969. But Let It Be had actually already been recorded, it had just been shelved due to the band being unhappy with it. It wasn’t until Abbey Road had already been recorded and released that the band hired Phil Specter to “salvage” Let It Be with his production work.

Abbey Road was a huge critical & commercial success. It remains one of The Beatles most popular albums to this day.

Abbey Road has also been critically acclaimed. For example it was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the top 500 albums of all time. And it’s currently ranked as the 2nd best album of all time by the users of the Rate Your Music website.

Track By Track:

#1 “Come Together”

This is one of the most well known songs on the album. Complete with John Lennon’s signature vocal and weird lyrics, George Harrison’s great lead guitar licks, and Paul McCartney’s swampy bass part that really puts the song over the edge.

It’s one of The Beatles coolest sounding songs, but strangely enough – it’s also one of their songs that’s been ruined the most in cover versions. In fact I’ve never heard a cover version of “Come Together” that wasn’t awful.

A disturbing bit of trivia about “Come Together” is that John Lennon is actually saying “shoot me” during the little musical breaks between the chorus and the verses. That lyric always gets to me a little bit considering Lennon’s fate in 1980.

2. “Something”

“Something” is another one of the best known songs on the album. It was written and sung by George Harrison and is one of his signature songs.

Frank Sinatra once famously commented that “Something” was his favorite Lennon-McCartney song. I’m not sure if that was an insult aimed at Lennon-McCartney or if Sinatra really didn’t know the song was written by George Harrison & not Lennon & McCartney.

3. “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”

A somewhat disturbingly childlike tale of a serial killer, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” is one of The Beatles songs has both it’s detractors and it’s supporters. Among it’s detractors was apparently John Lennon who is said to have despised the song (which was written & sung by Paul McCartney.)

The song is one of the first to feature the Moog synthesizer.

4. “Oh! Darling”

While Lennon hated McCartney’s “Maxwell Silver’s Hammer,” he loved his “Oh! Darling.” In fact he was so enamored with the song that he wanted to sing lead on it.

5. “Octopus’s Garden”

Ringo sings lead on this one. He also wrote the song (with some help from George Harrison although Ringo Starr is credited as the only songwriter.) It’s basically a rewrite of “Yellow Submarine” which The Beatles had recorded 3 years earlier.

6. “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”

This epic, mostly instrumental, track finishes off side one of Abbey Road in grand fashion with it’s amazing white noise buildup trick which blows my mind every time I hear it.

It really features some of The Beatles most interesting innovative work musically.

7. “Here Comes The Sun”

This is another George Harrison classic which is the perfect follow up to “I Want You” in the CD/iTunes/iPod format and the perfect opener to side two in the old vinyl LP format. The song, like “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” features the Moog synthesizer.

8. “Because”

This stunning song features some of The Beatles most beautiful harmonies. Lennon, McCartney, & Harrison’s vocals were triple tracked to make them sound like 9 voices.

The chords of the song were inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s classic piano piece “Moonlight Sonata.”

The song also features the Moog synthesizer.

#9 “You Never Give Me Your Money”

This was the first song of side two’s medley. Some of the melodies heard in this song were echoed later in track 15 “Carry That Weight.”

While the song is just the beginning of side two’s medley, it’s really a medley in and of itself as it contains a few very different sounding sections that sound stitched together.

#10 “Sun King”

This beautiful slow motion song features more beautiful harmonies from Lennon, McCartney, & Harrison. The song’s lyrics include words from different languages, both real and imagined.

#11 “Mean Mr. Mustard”

This short Lennon ditty leads directly into the next “Polythene Pam” and mentions “his sister Pam” in the lyrics.

#12 “Polythene Pam”

“So good looking but she looks like a man.” This is a great rock n roll track that clocks in barely over a minute long.

#13 “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”

“Polythene Pam” segues smoothly into this song which starts off with it’s title as the first lyric. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album.

#14 “Golden Slumbers”

The lyrics to this song were actually taken from a 17th century poem by Thomas Dekker. But the music was composed by Paul McCartney.

#15 “Carry That Weight”

The chorus of this song features all four Beatles. One part of the song references the melody/lyrics from “You Never Give Me Your Money.”

#16 “The End”

Features a drum solo by Ringo Starr (the only drum solo on any Beatles song) and short lead guitar solos by McCartney, Harrison, and Lennon – one after the other, in that order. They go through that sequence twice before the final “And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

#17 “Her Majesty”

This 23 second acoustic guitar ditty by Paul McCartney was originally intended to go between “Mean Mr. Mustard” & “Polythene Pam” but they had decided to leave it off the album. It was actually tacked on to the album at the end by sound engineer by mistake, but The Beatles decided they liked the mistake and left it on the album.

The Fox is now busy with concerts, family-oriented shows and a wide variety of other offerings. It’s the anchor of the Theatre District and perhaps Detroit’s greatest civic treasure. In 2008, the Fox welcomes American pop band The Jonas Brothers; Grammy award-winning R&B, soul and jazz singer Jill Scott; and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, recipients of the 2007 Grammy award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, for the track Gone Gone Gone. Audiences can also catch big-name entertainers like comedians Chris Rock and Frank Caliendo.

Joe Louis Arena

Home of the 10-time Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings, Joe Louis Arena proudly stands along the banks of the Detroit River. The 20,058-seat arena is Detroit City’s largest indoor venue and regularly hosts exciting attractions, including professional sports, college hockey, concerts, circuses, and even Disney on Ice shows. The People Mover stops at its door, so concert goers can park elsewhere downtown and reach the arena quickly. The Foo Fighters are set to rock Joe Louis Arena in 2008. Def Leppard with REO Speedwagon and Styx will also make an appearance here and later in the year, Rush makes a stop at Joe Louis during their extended Snakes & Arrows World Tour.

Cobo Arena

Situated near the Detroit River, the Cobo Arena is one of Michigan’s finest event sites, entertaining national and international audiences for over four decades. While the Detroit Basketball Championships are held here, so are some of the greatest rock and roll concerts in the world – Slipknot, Madonna and KISS, to name a few. Contemporary bands such as Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Bush, Oasis, Blink 182, and the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as seasoned veterans like Bob Dylan play here. Cobo hosts several sporting and civic events, rallies, gatherings, and location shoots.

DTE Energy Music Theatre

Originally known as the Pine Knob Music Theatre, due to its proximity to the nearby Pine Knob ski area and golf course, the DTE Energy Music Theatre was renamed in 2001 when DTE Energy purchased the area’s premiere outdoor amphitheater. Despite this change, many people still continue to call the venue “Pine Knob” or “the knob.” Many of music’s greatest stars have performed at the theater, including Chicago and Eddie Money. The Detroit venue is also on some of the biggest tours of the summer concert season, including Ozzfest, Gigantour, and Reggae Sunsplash. Canadian power-trio Rush have regarded the DTE as their favorite venue to play in the United States. The blockbuster Police tour makes its stop at the DTE in the summer of 2008. Tim McGraw and Gingantour with Megadeath are also scheduled to appear during the May to September concert season.

Meadow Brook Music Festival

Located at Oakland University, the Meadow Brook Music Festival accommodates up to 8,000 in the expansive outdoor pavilion and lawn seating area. The Meadow Brook Music Festival is the official summer home of the renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra, in addition to being one of the top concert venues in Michigan, showcasing the musical talents of James Taylor and His Band of Legends in 2008.

Palace of Auburn Hills

Detroit’s premier auditorium-style concert venue is often referred to simply as the Palace, and is home of the Detroit Pistons and hosts numerous concerts and special events throughout the year. Some of the venue’s past big-name entertainers include Sting, David Lee Roth, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. In early 2008, the Spice Girls performed at the Palace as part of their reunion tour The Return of the Spice Girls to a sold-out crowd. The 2008 season also includes Avril Lavigne, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Santana, Kanye West, Tom Petty, and Celine Dion.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1914, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is one of the United States’ most prestigious and accessible orchestras. In 2003, it launched the Max M. Fisher Music Center, a performing arts complex, which has become a popular venue for musical concerts of various genres, including some of the most popular jazz concerts in town. The Max houses the famous Orchestra Hall, the Music Box, Atrium, and Allesee Hall. Excellent acoustics and state-of-the-art facilities make every performance memorable. The Max also has facilities to host conferences, private concerts, banquets and weddings. The Chieftans, Ireland’s musical ambassadors, make their appearance at the Fisher in 2008, as well as five-time Academy award-winner John Williams, followed by New Orleans Jazz and the Mambo Kings.

Whilst a lot of attention is paid to the choice of music used in the wedding ceremony, as well as for the newly-weds first dance at the reception, the song selection for the last dance of the evening is also well worth planning in advance. Depending on how inebriated you and your guests are by the end of the evening, this is likely to be the final memory you take away with you.

If this still doesn’t inspire you, then why not simply finish with something that puts you in the mood for the impending honeymoon, like ‘Come Away With Me’ by Nora Jones or ‘Come Fly With Me’ by Frank Sinatra.

At the end of the day, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to selecting appropriate music for your wedding and the most important thing is to enjoy yourself. The culmination of their fascination with pushing the recording studio to the very limits of the possible was the ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album, which presented the Beatles in full-blown psychedelic regalia. The record employed everything from harpsichords to backward-masked lyrical tracks, and it is regarded as one of pop music’s greatest masterpieces of all time.

For the final track on the album, A Day In The Life Beatles members Paul McCartney and John Lennon pulled out all of the stops. Together with Martin, they constructed what can only be described as a song in 2 distinct movements linked by noisy, urgent crescendos. The two Beatles had written a few short verses independently of each other, and as neither of them had found a way to create a full song out of what they had recorded, they decided that the best thing to do would be to incorporate the two into a single track.

The transition between the two different parts of ‘A Day In The Life’ proved to be an early sticking point while recording. As can be heard on the Beatles Anthology, a simple piano bridge was initially inserted, along with the voice of a recording technician counting out the bars that the projected interlude would last. George Martin, at the request of McCartney, wrote a hasty orchestral score and presented it to a 40 piece group to record the 24 bars necessary to make the song whole. In order to make the orchestra sound larger than it actually was, their part was recorded and overdubbed 4 times, creating a cacophony of sound that to this day is enough to disturb the peace.

The raucous final crescendo was capped off by a single piano chord, reverberating into silence. The song is followed by what was originally the run-out track on the record, a mish-mash of Beatle-talk that was cut up and re-arranged by Martin into complete nonsense. Compact disc and cassette releases of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ tacked this track onto the end of ‘A Day In The Life’, and faded it out into eventual silence.

People feared at the time that this was McCartney’s break into a solo career, but this was not true, not at least for another five years. Yesterday was still be part of the Beatles’s history instead of merely McCartney’s masterpiece.
