When you’re checking off the list of reasons why you should plan a visit to Palm Springs – sunshine, great resorts, shopping, outdoor sports and spectacular scenery – don’t overlook live musical theater. We’re talking specifically about the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, a professionally produced show that has proven so successful that it is now in its 19th season.

The cast of the Follies is an incredibly talented group of older folks – somehow the term “senior citizens” just doesn’t seem to apply here – who all had long careers performing on Broadway, on national television and in some of the best theater groups in the country. The 16 cast members have all been at the top of their profession, singing and dancing their hearts out in major productions in the country’s best venues.

Now, with ages ranging from late 50′s to the oldest working showgirl at 86 years young, the cast members have found a way to continue performing their physically demanding roles at a time in their lives when many people consider walking the dog a major physical accomplishment.

Make no mistake, this is not just a group of old people pretending to be young — not by any means. These entertainers are the real deal, every bit as energetic as the dancers you saw in all those old Gene Kelly movies and performing routines so strenuous that even young people would have to get in shape to pull them off.

And no doubt these exhaustive dance numbers must take their toll. As Master of Ceremonies Riff Markowitz kidded at the end of the show: “You all need to go home now because we have to take a nap.”

This year’s show is a review of popular songs from the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s. On one medley the group may be dressed in costumes and hairstyles of the World War II era, while in another part of the show it’s all about Elvis and the styles of the 50′s. Beatles music and other elements of the 60′s are created in still another part of the show.

There are also the glitzy showgirl numbers that feature the lady cast members dressed in elaborate costumes adorned with frilly flowers and feathers and headdresses half again as tall as the ladies. Skin-tight body suits give the impression they are exposing lots of flesh covered only by a few bright ornaments placed in strategic locations. No matter the age, all of the performers are in amazing shape and proud to show it off.

The three-hour show is well-paced, broken up by guest performances that are usually famous show business names. During our visit, the guests were the Four Aces, a popular male vocal group from the 1950′s that saw 30 of their songs reach the Top 40. Another guest was Brad Cummings, an extremely talented ventriloquist who kept the audience in stitches and proved to be one of the show’s highlights.

At the center of this production is Markowitz, who actually is a co-founder of the Follies. Markowitz, who has a background in television production, says he learned how to work an audience when he would go out and do the warm-up before a live television taping. Today, Markowitz has the jokes and timing down pat and is an obvious stand-up talent who could go toe-toe with Leno or any of the greats. His frequent monologues are spread out over the evening and often poke fun at growing old – a subject the older-than-average audience completely understands.

But in case you were thinking this show is just for old people, it’s really not. It’s hilarious and entertaining for mid-teens on up, but especially for those middle-age and older. While the songs and costumes may be dated, the humor is contagious and the performances are breathtaking.

On this, our most recent visit to Palm Springs we focused on downtown Palm Springs (site of the Follies), where we enjoyed browsing the shops along North and South Palm Canyon Drive. Everything is within walking distance and one great suggestion is to plan to have lunch in one of the sidewalk cafes.

While the desert communities are famous for their mega resorts with golf courses and spacious grounds, we enjoyed a more “close-in” experience this time staying at the Holiday Inn Resort, just a mile or so from the downtown shopping area. One of just a few Holiday Inns nationally that are permitted to use the “resort” designation in its name, this hotel went through a major renovation in the last couple of years and is built around an Olympic-size swimming pool and spacious and popular pool patio area. The kids will enjoy the “Dive-in” movies presented outdoors each night in the pool area.

The resort is surrounded by palm trees and features a Moroccan style fountain. Holiday Inn Resort offers a complimentary shuttle to downtown Palm Springs and, if you want to dine on property, Billy D’s Restaurant has a sports bar feel and is popular with guests who want to watch sports on one of several big-screen TV’s.

The rooms at the Holiday Inn Resort also feature wide flat-screen televisions as well as other resort-style amenities such as mini-toiletries, high-quality beds and linens, refrigerators, poolside or balcony views, work stations and tables where you can dine in-room. Best of all, the prices at Holiday Inn Resort are quite competitive.

On this particular trip we had some outdoors fun in an area known as the Indian Canyons. Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Palm Springs, the Indian Canyons are several canyons preserved by the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians and open – for a fee – to the general public for hiking, horseback riding and picnicking. There are four canyons altogether, each with different features.

We spent an afternoon hiking in the 15-mile-long Palm Canyon, a fascinating landscape with its indigenous flora and fauna that make it seem so far from the glitz and glamour of Palm Springs. This trail features groves of the California Fan Palm, a dramatic tree that provides shade and picturesque scenery along this moderate hike. The grade is gradual and part of the foot path is paved, winding down into the canyon for picnicking by the stream and then up the canyon where visitors can find plenty of interesting rock formations and colorful landscape to explore. Also check out the Trading Post where the tribe has many interesting Indian products and artifacts.

Lots of people can play guitar but what music do you play on your guitar when somebody says, “go on, play something”? Do you play a song, an instrumental, a simple classical piece? Your fingerpicking skills will come in handy if you want to impress a crowd of friends. The best thing about that is that you don’t have to be a virtuoso. Just the barest minimum of fingerpicking breaks or short solos in a song will impress the average Joe or Joelene greatly.

Here’s a few suggestions from a wide range of artists and genres. “Feel” and “Angels” by Robbie Williams, “American Pie” by Don McLean, “From the Beginning” by Emerson Lake and Palmer, “Cecilia” by Simon and Garfunkel, “Feelin’ Groovy” by Simon and Garfunkel, “Blowin In The Wind” by Bob Dylan, “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, “More Than Words” by Extreme, “Under The Bridge” by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles, “House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals, “Wild Thing by The Troggs and “Runaway” by The Corrs. These are songs that everybody in the world knows the words to, or at least they can fake it.

Some artists that are always popular at singalongs are James Taylor, Leonard Cohen and Greenday. Oh, and maybe Suzanne Vega. Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and “Captain Jack” are songs that get a crowd going but maybe you need some vocal skills for those.

“Wonderwall” by Oasis deserves a special mention. The name was taken from the name of an album by George Harrison, and the song was the subject of speculation regarding who was in the thoughts of the composer, Noel Gallagher when he wrote it. All that aside, “Wonderwall” has been covered by lots of artists and everybody loves it. It’s the kind of song that unites strangers from all over the world.

When you are choosing your repertoire, you can spread your net wide. No need to stick to the Top Forty, go for the Top One Hundred of whatever decade you feel comfortable with. An easy way out that does not need too much research is to just jot down a bunch of Beatles titles. You can be as basic or as flashy as you like because the songs stand up by themselves with just basic accompaniment or you can use any of the classical guitar style arrangements that you can find in music shops. “Blackbird” and “Hey Jude” would be a good beginning and finale.

You might want to think about an instrumental piece to continue the mood once the singing has died away. “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams might be a little challenging if you don’t think of yourself as a “real” guitar player but it is surprisingly easy to play.

Of course if you are not likely to be playing for strangers, you will have some idea of the kind of music your friends like, so just let their tastes be you guide with a little of your own style thrown in.

There are also songs that maybe should not be played. “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton, “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Smoke On The Water” by Deep Purple and “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles are contenders for this list but that probably only applies if your audience is sober.

The fascinating world of music lets you enjoy music in one form or other. There are various types of music these days: pop music, folk music, jazz music and rock music. All these type of music are enjoyable to hear. The songs take you through different emotions. Rock music is loud and fast than anything you’ve heard before.

In 1960, British and American rock bands became popular. Bands like Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Queen, Black Sabbath, etc. are some of the famous bands. In 1980,the genre that was quite popular was glam metal. The various artists like Twisted Sister, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, Queen, Kiss, Sweet and the New York Dolls were the artists of 1980’s.

This type of music became popular in the 1950s in America and Europe. This famous music is mainly based on older musical styles like the rhythm and blues music originated by African American performers such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard. The music has a heavy focus on guitar, drums and powerful vocals. The most popular artist of rock music in the early days was Elvis Presley. His dance and powerful music can surprise anyone. “The Beatles” became successful in the 1960’s. This group was inspired by Blues and rhythm.

Rock music is evolving itself and coming in a variety of styles. Other music forms like heavy metal are also a form of rock music. Some of the heavy metal bands include Metallic and Megadeth. Rock music comes in a wide range of forms like soft pop and heavy metal. This “Rock ‘N Roll” type of music became popular in 1950s and 1960s. This new sound came from many musical styles.

In the initial days, this music was admired only in small clubs and on radio. Afterwards, it became famous with the programs like American Bandstand. Then, people could view their favourite bands on the television. Many people criticised about this type of music as they did not like the loud and fast lyrics.

Rock music began with jazz music, blues tunes, etc. It also featured electrically amplified guitars, drummers and harmonicas. By the mid-1950, performers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Joe Turner became famous with the white audiences. Radio disc jockeys named this music rock ‘n roll.

One of the best musical album, “Sticks and Stones” has everything from fun to catchy guitar riffs. It covers a range of emotions and depicts the depth of their talent. The album grabs attention with the song “Cathedral.”. The catchy rock beat combines with a variety of instrumentation. The title track “Sticks and Stones” is also worth listening. The hard to resist lyrics would make your day. The instrumental track “ZOZ” is a classic jam track with brilliant double guitar interface. Another noteworthy feature of this track is the striking beats. Another beautiful track is “All Roads Lead to Home”. This track shows the fast and catchy style of the band. Lastly, there is a song that most college students can appreciate. “Raise a Glass”, an old Irish folk song has people singing along in the background. “Rock and Roll” – by Led Zeppelin

When Led Zeppelin sold this song and its classic lyrics to Cadillac, many die-hard fans screamed, “SELLOUT!”  Especially because, until that time, Zeppelin had a strict anti-licensing policy regarding all of their songs and lyrics.  It was rumored that singer Robert Plant opposed licensing the song to Cadillac and was outvoted by guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones, although he stated in a Chicago Sun Times article that he thought the ad would be a great medium for exposing the song to a generation of new listeners who never tune in to classic radio.  Still, there are very few Zep fans who don’t cringe when some kid refers to “Rock and Roll” as “The Cadillac Song.”

“Revolution” was one of the first songs to set off the widespread licensing of song lyrics and music for TV commercials, and it also set off a huge uproar among Beatles’ fans, who felt it disrespected John Lennon’s memory, and his political beliefs.  Unfortunately, the surviving Beatles could not control their song performance rights, which were held by Capitol Records, or the rights to their lyrics and music, which were held by Michael Jackson.  Still the controversy was so fierce that Nike ditched plans to use Beatles songs in future TV ads.

“Lust for Life” – by Iggy Pop

A cruise line that advertises itself with the music and lyrics of a song about heroin addiction?  Now, that’s REALLY freestyle cruising!  Royal Caribbean wanted to be associated with the song’s upbeat tempo, and the lyrics of its chorus, which emphasize living life with gusto.  But it definitely didn’t want to be associated with any questionable lyrics.  So the version used in the commercial begins with the lyrics, “Here comes Johnny Yen again,” skips past “With the liquor and drugs/And the flesh machine/He’s gonna do another strip tease,” and jumps right to the chorus, “Lust for life.”

“Baby Come Back” – by Player

The music and lyrics of this 1978 #1 hit were given new life in a Swiffer WetJet commercial.  A lover’s lament, those lyrics, “Baby come back/You can blame it all on me/I was wrong/And I just can’t live without you,” are now being sung by mops that are apparently stalking women who’ve ditched them for the dapper and dashing Swiffer WetJet.  The mops try to woo the ladies back by crooning this song’s lyrics, and sending them flowers and candy.  They may be housewives, but c’mon–they’re not desperate!!

Stop The Insanity-Hire Someone To Write A Jingle!

Many years ago, in a far away place and time, companies wishing to promote their wares on television would hire songwriters to develop advertising jingles to promote whatever they were selling. But recently, in my mind, some companies have crossed the proverbial line, so to speak, by using classic Beatles’ music to pitch their products.

Am I the only one who is absolutely appalled by the superstore Target’s use of the great Beatles’ hit entitled “Hello Goodbye” (although in the commercial they have changed it to “Hello Good Buy,” how clever). Couldn’t the corporate big wigs just hire Barry Manilow (who wrote the classic McDonalds’ jingle: “You deserve a break today”) to write a sappy jingle?

However, sadly, this trend has been used over and over again in recent years and there does not seem to be an end of it. Moreover, if I hear the Badfinger song “Come And Get It” (in the advertisement for GMC automobiles), I’ll scream!

When Michael Jackson allowed Nike to abuse the legendary hit by the Beatles’ “Revolution,” it seemed that the floodgates were opened, and an advertisement bandwagon was born. But, I am not sure that these companies realize just how many people are offended by their blatant misuse of these classic rock and roll songs.

But, apparently, these starving songwriters (or whoever owns the rights to the music) are being very well compensated for the right to use these classic songs for advertisement purposes. In fact Randy Bachman, formally of the Canadian group the Guess Who and later Bachman-Turner Overdrive, turned down a lucrative offer from a bathroom tissue company to use his song “Takin’ Care Of Business” (how clever) for a television commercial. He did, however, allow the song to be used for an Office Depot commercial, calling the partnership “a perfect marriage.” Bachman also declared, “you make more in one year with that commercial than you do in your entire lifetime of your band in the 70′s with that song.” I guess I am naive, but when did it all become about the money, not the music?

Sadly, this trend is catching on like wildfire, as nowadays you can hear many rock legends allowing their classic music to be used for commercial purposes. Why we have Iggy Pop for Royal Caribbean, Bob Dylan promoting Victoria’s Secret products, Billy Preston teaming up with the Zombies for Fidelity Investments, Led Zeppelin pitching Cadillacs, Aerosmith for Buick, the O’Jays for Coors Beer, Deep Purple promoting Dodge, the Who allowing their music to be used in Cisco commercials, the flower power group the Association pitching Allstate Insurance, why we even have Helen Reddy’s classic anthem hit song “I Am Woman” being utilized in a Burger King commercial. The list goes on and on and when will the insanity end, and are these songs actually helping to sell the products they are endorsing?

It won’t be long before we hear he Donovan song “Mellow Yellow” actually promoting the soft drink called Mellow Yellow. Or, how about the R.E.M. song called “Orange Crush” being used for, you guessed it, the soft drink called Orange Crush. While we’re at it, how about beating down some more Beatles’ classic such as “Ticket To Ride” for the highest bidding airline company, “She Loves You,” for the latest stinky men’s cologne or the song “I Feel Fine,” for an allergy medication? How about the appropriate song “Leaving On A Jet Plane” for United Airlines or Blondie’s hit single “Call Me” for AT & T? We could be hearing the classic Hollies’ tune entitled “Bus Stop” (plug in any major city bus line here) or “Angel Of The Morning” by Marrilee Rush for some feminine product or even “Baby I Love You” by the Ronettes for a diaper commercial. I have a few for Viagra, how about the Three Dog Night ditty called “Easy To Be Hard” or Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and the Rolling Stones’ hit “Start Me Up?”

While we’re at it, how about the Rolling Stones’ hit “Tumbin’ Dice” (plug in any Indian Casino), the Police hit entitled “Every Breath You Take” for a cold remedy, the iconic Elvis hit “Hound Dog” being used for a dog food commercial? How about the Who’s classic song called “I Can See For Miles” for Lens Crafter, or the Mama’s and the Papa’s 60′s hit “California Dreamin’” for any airline company?

We can take it several steps further with “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You” by the Bee Gees for a telephone company, the Bobby Fuller hit entitled “I Fought The Law,” (plug in any lawyer’s name) or Don Henley’s hit song called “Dirty Laundry” for Tide laundry soap? One could also make a case for the Chicago single called “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” being used in a Timex commercial or the Doors’ classic song “Light My Fire” being utilized by Kingsford Charcoal?

It’s just a matter of time before we hear the Tom Jones’ song “What’s New Pussycat” in a cat food commercial. Or how about the Raspberries hit “Go All The Way” used for a Trojan commercial? And don’t get me started on sleeping aids like “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics or “Last Night I Didn’t Get To Sleep At All” by the Fifth Dimension. How about the Eagles’ classic entitled “Take It To The Limit” being used to pitch a major credit card? And any local funeral home would be pleased to use the Queen ditty called “Another One Bites The Dust” or “When I Die” by Blood, Sweat & Tears and God forbid, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” by Bob Dylan. And now that you got me started, how would the hit song by Olivia Newton-John called “Have You Ever Been Mellow” or the Elton John hit called, “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”; or better yet, “Do You Feel Like We Do,” by Peter Frampton being used for the latest and greatest antidepressant to hit the market? One could use the Johnny Nash tune called “I Can See Clearly Now” for any eyeglass maker or “One Headlight,” by the Wallflowers in an Auto Zone commercial. And one more just for fun, the Neil Diamond classic “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” utilized for an FTD commercial?

The list seems endless and we may hear some of the aforementioned music paired up with their respective products. Some may seem downright silly, but after all, it is all about the money, not the music.
