2. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera: Both began their careers as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club, both got super famous in the mid-90’s, and both singers have alarmed the media with controversy and sex appeal.

3. Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan: Both stars are recognized as Disney-film actresses, both make music that is considered “throwaway pop,” and both got famous at the same time. Oh yeah, both of these ladies also dated Aaron Carter, nice.

5. Guns n’ Roses and Poison: Both bands got major press in the 1980’s, all band members have long, frizzy hairdos, and both play intoxicating mixes of hard rock and roll.

6. Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls: This is probably the most explosive not to mention bloodiest fued in music and hip hop history. These guys used to be friends but they are both hard up gangsters, they’re from opposite coasts, and both leave behind a legacy of fame crushed by violence.

The actual recording of the final track for the album, A Day In The Life Beatles was done in a full out creative environment where Paul McCartney and John Lennon were in their top song writing form. Writing two separate pieces of the song separately, the had to deal with how to incorporate the two pieces and join them together. After some time, it was McCartney and George Martin who came up with the orchestral middle section.

After the basic track for the song was refined and additional parts added, there was still the problem of the missing 24-bar middle that would connect the two sections of song. Paul McCartney had the idea of bringing in a full 90 piece orchestra to fill in the missing gap and requested that George Marting write a loose score for the section that would encourage the classically trained musicians to improvise a little within the parameter of A Day In The Life Beatles. While wanting the full 90 piece orchestra, in the end a 40 piece ensemble recorded the improvised section a total of 4 times, with eventual overdubbing for a massive crescendo of sound that is powerful, and reverberating. To cap it off, the orchestra members were asked to wear costume pieces over their orchestral uniforms which was to keep in line with the Beatles penchant for experimentation and flair for the flamboyant. In the end, after 34 hours of recording time, ‘A Day In The Life’ can be easily regarded as on of the more creative recording sessions of the Beatles career and a song that still lives on in several covers and samples.

They are characterized by grand sets, good music and feel-good performances.

Vegas shows have become impossibly elaborate and over the top. But when it comes to providing first-rate entertainment, they are the most amazing shows on earth.

The culmination of their fascination with pushing the recording studio to the very limits of the possible was the ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album, which presented the Beatles in full-blown psychedelic regalia. The record employed everything from harpsichords to backward-masked lyrical tracks, and it is regarded as one of pop music’s greatest masterpieces of all time.

For the final track on the album, A Day In The Life Beatles members Paul McCartney and John Lennon pulled out all of the stops. Together with Martin, they constructed what can only be described as a song in 2 distinct movements linked by noisy, urgent crescendos. The two Beatles had written a few short verses independently of each other, and as neither of them had found a way to create a full song out of what they had recorded, they decided that the best thing to do would be to incorporate the two into a single track.

The transition between the two different parts of ‘A Day In The Life’ proved to be an early sticking point while recording. As can be heard on the Beatles Anthology, a simple piano bridge was initially inserted, along with the voice of a recording technician counting out the bars that the projected interlude would last. George Martin, at the request of McCartney, wrote a hasty orchestral score and presented it to a 40 piece group to record the 24 bars necessary to make the song whole. In order to make the orchestra sound larger than it actually was, their part was recorded and overdubbed 4 times, creating a cacophony of sound that to this day is enough to disturb the peace.

The raucous final crescendo was capped off by a single piano chord, reverberating into silence. The song is followed by what was originally the run-out track on the record, a mish-mash of Beatle-talk that was cut up and re-arranged by Martin into complete nonsense. Compact disc and cassette releases of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ tacked this track onto the end of ‘A Day In The Life’, and faded it out into eventual silence.

These seven songs were The Beatles at their most experimental. Not all of these songs are among their best (although some certainly are) but they are all a cherished part of The Beatles back catalog to me.

#1 “What’s The New Mary Jane”

This song which features only John Lennon, George Harrison and Lennon’s soon to be wife Yoko Ono. It was not actually released until The Beatles Anthology 3. It was intended for The Beatles incredible 1968 double album known as The White Album (it was actually self titled.) It was not included due to time constraints.

The song features a simple piano part, bizarre lyrics, and insane sound effects. The last 4 minutes of the song is basically just spacey sound effects. It’s definitely one of those songs that’s quite hard to describe with words. It’s definitely a real trip.

#2 “Revolution #9″

This 8 minute track was included on The White Album and has probably become The Beatles most infamous track. Many hate it. Some love it. Count me among those that loves it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t listen to it every time I put the album on, it’s not that kind of track. But when I do listen to it, I still find it fascinating.

#3 “Tomorrow Never Knows”

Incredibly the last track on Revolver, “Tomorrow Never Knows” was actually the first song recorded for the album. I think that’s incredible as the song, even 42 years later, still sounds like the future. With lyrics from the book The Psychedelic Experience (which was based upon the Tibetan Book of the Dead), backwards guitars, insane sounding tape loops, this was a song that sounded thousands of years removed from the mop top hits of just 2 years previous.

#4 “Wild Honey Pie”

This is a strange little song which was completely sung and performed by Paul McCartney. It just consists of the refrain “Honey Pie” and some bizarre sounding guitars.

#5 “I Am The Walrus”

Possibly The Beatles most perfect weird psychedelic song. It’s endlessly listenable as there are so many layers to it that one can literally hear something they’ve never heard before even on their 1000th listen.

This was The Beatles at the peak of their “studio as an instrument” phase and it’s still inspiring countless experimental rock musicians to this day. Forget “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” it’s all about “I Am The Walrus.”

#6 “Strawberry Fields Forever”

If “Strawberry Fields Forever” isn’t quite as weird as “I Am The Walrus,” it’s probably even more perfect. It’s a truly brilliant song and much like “I Am The Walrus” it’s the an amazing example of the “studio as an instrument” aesthetic that The Beatles perfected in 1967.

#7 “Within You Without You”

I feel this song often gets short shrift. And yes, it’s very experimental. A “pop” song with an all Indian instrumental? Sure there was “Love You To” & “The Inner Light” before, but this one took it to the next level. I think it’s a brilliant song that fits on Sgt. Pepper perfectly. It’s a trip through some bizarre carnival and you have to make a stop in India while you are there, of course.
