The Musical Box Tickets—reliving the Wonder of a Genesis Show

The Musical Box tickets are now available on Stubhub.com!

In the 1970s, rock music was changing. Fans were prepared to listen to more experimentation in the music they loved, and many bands were more than happy to provide that. Progressive rock, which became better known as prog, took off in America and abroad. The music of bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Steely Dan and Moby Grape would soon come to epitomize wandering music that was cerebral and tackled the subject of its songs in narratives, sometimes spanning an entire album. These concept albums proved popular to fans as well.

Though prog laid the groundwork for these massive tales, one prog band, Genesis, outdid the efforts of all the others in presenting their musical visions on stage. Famously fronted by Peter Gabriel and Phil Collinsâ??both of whom went on to establish their own very successful solo careersâ??the bandâ??s unique rock sound was complimented by surreal and sometimes abstract images during their live shows. Those in attendance were deeply impressedâ??so much so that, years later, an intrepid group of musicians would seek help from the bandâ??s members in recreating the entire experience for new fans.

This band dubbed itself The Musical Box, after one of Genesisâ?? first huge singles. It was an appropriate name to pick, as the song is a winding Victorian narrative featuring ghosts and murder, featuring the kind of surreal imagery Genesis would become well-known for.

Their shows focus on specific tours that Genesis embarked on. For one of them, for example, the audience got a shock when a figure walks out on the dark stage with bat wings on his head. This happens even before the music even starts, providing a uniquely frightening and yet also thrilling lead into the show.

With their music and performances standing out so starkly in peopleâ??s mind, Genesis became a favorite for prog-rock fans in the 1970s. As more and more people bought Genesis tickets, they passed word of mouth along about this exciting stage show that featured homemade special effects. Now, years after the bandâ??s heyday, you can experience that same wonder, watching The Musical Box live.
